China's Huawei Technologies is setting up new plants in two Hungarian cities, benefits for Komárom and Pécs include a total of 700 new jobs. Recruitment is already in progress.

A  local business daily reported Huawei is planning to make telecom network equipment in the industrial parks of Pécs and Komárom. The giant Chinese telco company plans to hire 280 new staff in the coming year as well  as an additional 400 next year, aiming for output over USD 1 billion next year.

British Telecom (BT), perhaps  the world's biggest telecom company, will reduce 10% of its labour force after posting a full year loss of more than $250 million.

The 15,000 jobs by British Telecom this year. This is already on top of the 15,000 jobs lost in 2008-2009.

Wiki parhners with orangeOrange, one of Europe's largest telecommunications company has struck a deal with encyclopaedia giant Wikimedia. The plan is to provide co-branded content that will be accessed via Wikipedia channels on Orange’s mobile and internet portals.

Orange will be allowed to place ads alongside Wikipedia content and the ad revenues will be split between the two. Although the financial details are still sketchy, Wikimedia described the deal as import to increasing revenue streams.

Orange will place links to Wikipedia content from it's mobile and web portals and develop mobile widgets that allow users to access Wikipedia content directly from their mobiles through it's portals.

Here is a little good news from the US about job creation in the telecoms industry. Verizon plans to hire 250 call centre jobs for technicians in Maryland in the US. The move sees confidence in the future of wireless in a move closely watched by commentators in Europe.

Although, similar confidence is yet to be seen in Europe, some of the big Telecom names like Ericsson and Vodafone are said to be positioning themselves for a possible upturn in 2010 and their focus will be on wireless technology for mobile computing.

Going against economic trends, 2 companies have announced that they are creating 80 positions in Belfast, Northern Ireland.  Intune Networks which specialise in optical applications for IT and video services are to recruit 34 jobs and will recruit a further 43 by 2010 in the communications sector.

The R&D centre will concentrate on providing high speed internet and connectivity  to towns and cities.

Qualcomm has given its approval for the Third Generation Partnership Project's (3GPP's) endorsment of the eCall modem specification, which supports the EUs road safety initiative (eCall).

This initiative aims to provide speedy assistance to road accidents anywhere in the European Union by making an automatic emergency voice call via the mobile network to the emergency services. Crucial information like position location will also be transmitted.

Google CEO, Eric Schmidt, has described Twitter as "a poor man's email system," at an investor conference in San Francisco on Tuesday.

Twitter allows users to type 140 character notes on everything or anything they're thinking and is also a powerful search tool. Users can search for news or current events and get a list of 'tweets' made in the previous few seconds.

Many are now speculating that the search giant will eventually acquire Twitter to supplement their Google search engine. Google who have recently launched their own twitter feed, Googleplex did not say if it would ever want to acquire the company, which he praised for its success despite Twitter not finding a way to make money.

Wednesday - France Telecom SA has reported a rise of 1.5% in its earnings before depreciation, tax, interest, and other expenses for 2008. The telecom giant has subsequently increased its dividend, and stated that it expects to generate up tp EUR8 billion a year in cash flow over the next three years.<br />

The  large French fixed-line and mobile operator will pay a dividend of EUR1.40 per share - they had paid EUR1.30 the previous year. This comes on top of a payout in September of EUR0.60 a share.<br />

There was panic at Microsoft this week as a prototype phone loaded with secret software was stolen.

Microsoft has plans to muscle in on Apples' dominance of the mobile market by releasing a new mobile and operating system by the year end.

The new Windows Mobile 6.5 had only been launched at the Mobile World Congress in barcelona when a phone fitted with the new generation software was stolen.

Australias telco giant, Telstar CEO was given the device ahead of the launch to test which was lost by one of his executives. I'd say there's not a hole big enough in Barcelona to swallow him up right now!

green environment moblie phoneMobile operators are this falling over each other to display their green credentials at the mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The GSM Association has successfully lobbied for a universal phone charger as they generally outlast the phone themselves. These chargers are based on the blackberry storm connection and will be released later this year.

Samgsung and LG have jumped on the bandwagon with phone that have built in solar panels which allow for a short conversation after a 10 minute charge. Meanwhile LG has promised to remove harmful chemicals from the manufacturing process next year as well as improvements to its packaging.
