Mobile operators are this falling over each other to display their green credentials at the mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The GSM Association has successfully lobbied for a universal phone charger as they generally outlast the phone themselves. These chargers are based on the blackberry storm connection and will be released later this year.

Samgsung and LG have jumped on the bandwagon with phone that have built in solar panels which allow for a short conversation after a 10 minute charge. Meanwhile LG has promised to remove harmful chemicals from the manufacturing process next year as well as improvements to its packaging.

Not to be outdone, even though it had no concept 'Green' phone on display, Nokia touted its phone recycling policy in 85 countries as evidence of their green commitments. The Nokia's 6210 Navigator was voted greenpeace' greenest smartphone.

China handset manufacturer giant ZTE have unveiled plans to develop solar panel technology for phone masts. These would be epically useful in developing countries where electricity supply is patchy and inefficient.
