There was panic at Microsoft this week as a prototype phone loaded with secret software was stolen.

Microsoft has plans to muscle in on Apples' dominance of the mobile market by releasing a new mobile and operating system by the year end.

The new Windows Mobile 6.5 had only been launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona when a phone fitted with the new generation software was stolen.

Australia telecom giant, Telstar CEO was given the device ahead of the launch to test which was lost by one of his executives. I'd say there's not a hole big enough in Barcelona to swallow him up right now!

The fear is that leaks about bugs and feature deficiencies may over-shadow the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5 which Microsoft is hoping to be it's answer to the iPhone and Google Android.

One feature is Windows Marketplace which is Microsoft's answer to the highly popular iTunes store. The phone will also offer free backup service and easy synchronization to other devices and computers.
